Marketplace plans are income-based and often come with government subsidies. Also known as “Obamacare,” Marketplace plans are designed to accept everyone, including people with medical conditions and pre-existing conditions. Private insurance, on the other hand, is based on your age, ZIP code, and health history. It usually requires a short medical underwriting process but offers more flexibility, lower out-of-pocket costs, and greater control over your coverage and providers.

The main difference is flexibility.

PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans let you see any doctor or specialist you want, anywhere in the country, no referrals needed. You can go to in-network or out-of-network providers and still receive coverage. That’s why they’re perfect for people who travel or work in different states.

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans are more restricted. They require you to stay inside a local network of doctors and usually need referrals to see specialists. If you go outside the network, most HMO plans won’t pay for the visit.
