Health Insurance for Freelancers: A PPO That’s Yours, Wherever You Work

No employer. Income that goes up and down. Work from anywhere. You need coverage built for that life.

For most healthy freelancers, the best health insurance is a private PPO that you own. Its price is based on your age, your ZIP code and the deductible you choose, not on how much you made this year.

It uses a broad national PPO network with no referrals. You can apply any time of year, and coverage often starts as soon as next month. Health questions and approval are required.

Your Plan, Your Choices

What a private PPO can include

  • A deductible you pick, with options from $2,500 up to $10,000
  • 80/20 coinsurance, a set yearly out-of-pocket maximum and no lifetime maximum
  • Doctor visits, labs, x-rays and prescriptions before the deductible, through the everyday-care rider (available in most states)
  • Optional add-ons for accidents and critical illness
The Reality

Why Is Health Insurance Harder for Freelancers?

Most health plans were built for someone with one employer, one paycheck and one ZIP code.

💼

Nobody is paying part of the bill

At a job, your employer paid part of your premium. On your own, you see the full price for the first time.

📈

Your income goes up and down

A big project, a slow quarter, a client who pays late. Pricing tied to a yearly income guess can shift when real numbers come in.

🧾

Surprises at tax time

Marketplace help is based on an income estimate. If your year is bigger than you guessed, you may owe some back when you file.

🗺

You work from anywhere

Many Marketplace plans are HMO or EPO plans with local networks. That is hard when work takes you out of town.

📆

Clients do not wait for Open Enrollment

You may go freelance in March. You need coverage that can start when your life changes.

🛟

No safety net behind you

No sick leave, no group disability plan, no HR department. When you are the whole company, your plan has to do more.

The Core Decision

Marketplace Plan or Your Own PPO: Which Fits a Freelancer?

The question freelancers ask me most.

Marketplace Plan

The standard exchange option

  • Mostly HMO or EPO plans with narrower networks
  • Often high deductibles
  • Help with the price is tied to your income estimate
  • Networks are often built around one state
VS
Your Own Private PPO

A plan built around you

  • Broad national PPO network, no referrals
  • You choose your deductible
  • Price based on age, ZIP code and deductible, not income
  • Apply any time of year
My Take for Healthy Freelancers

If you are healthy and want a real PPO, owning your own private plan usually fits freelance life better.

How Do PPO Networks Work for Freelancers?

A PPO lets you see any doctor or hospital in its network, and you do not need a referral to see a specialist. The private plans I offer use broad national PPO networks, the same kind large employers use, with access to any network hospital and most doctors across the country.

If you work from a client’s city for a week or take a working trip, your plan is not stuck in one county. Want to keep your doctor? I can check if your doctor is in network before you apply. Here is the difference between a PPO and an HMO.

You buy these plans directly through a licensed agent, outside the Marketplace. The plan belongs to you, not to a client or an employer.

The PPO Advantage

Why a Private PPO Works for Freelancers

One plan for a life without a boss or a fixed paycheck.

🔑

It’s yours

Gain or lose a client. Your plan stays the same.

🧾

Priced by age, ZIP and deductible

Not by your income, so a big year does not change what you owe at tax time.

🌐

A national network

Broad PPO access across the country, not a single-state HMO.

🚀

No referrals

See a specialist directly when you need one.

🩺

Everyday care without the deductible

Office visits, labs, x-rays and prescriptions through the everyday-care rider (available in most states).

📅

Apply any time of year

Coverage often starts as soon as next month after approval.

Your private PPO
Income-based help: settled at tax time Private PPO: price not tied to income

With a private PPO, your premium comes from your age, ZIP code and the deductible you pick. A great quarter does not raise it. No income estimate to guess. No surprise bill when you file.

What It Costs

How Much Does Health Insurance for Freelancers Cost?

The short answer: the price of a private PPO depends on your age, your ZIP code and the deductible you choose. It does not depend on your income.

  • Your deductible. Options run from $2,500 up to $10,000. A higher deductible lowers your monthly cost. A lower one raises it.
  • How you use care. The everyday-care rider covers office visits, labs and prescriptions before the deductible, so a higher deductible can make sense.
  • Optional add-ons. Accident and critical-illness coverage, only if they fit your budget.

When You Can Enroll

When Can Freelancers Sign Up for Health Insurance?

You can apply for a private PPO any time of year. After approval, coverage often starts as soon as next month.

Marketplace plans work differently. Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Outside it you need a qualifying life event. See all Open Enrollment dates.

Private plans are medically underwritten. You answer health questions and the plan must approve you, so not everyone qualifies. Once you are approved, the plan can’t be cancelled because your health changes, as long as your application answers were true.

The more “yes” answers, the better the fit

  • Is it a PPO, or am I stuck with a narrow HMO?

  • Does it work when I am out of town?
  • Can I add accident or critical-illness coverage?
